IT PENETRATION: A DIVINE PROJECT

T

he new Information Technology (Industry) Association of Nigeria (ITAN) President Mr Jimson Olufuye has said that IT penetration in Nigeria is a divine project which cannot be truncated. Quoting from Habakuk 2:14, at the just concluded ITAN IT penetration Seminar, he said the prophecy of Habakuk (a prophet in the Bible) will surely come to pass as Information Technology stands as the sure vehicle for knowledge dissemination for development in all ramifications.

Corroborating his position are Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, ATCON President, Mr Lanre Ajayi, Nigeria Internet Group President and Dr GMM Obi former President Computer Professionals (Registration Council of) Nigeria (CPN) who maintained that the infrastructure is by and large on the ground but the major impediment is local content that would drive the infrastructure. Engr Omotunde Young, MD Kes Computers is of the view that the factor that can readily drive more IT penetration is the relevance of content for diverse local academic, business and social endeavours. Where relevant local content is available, he said the Installmental payment for PC or IT equipment might not be a major issue compared to outright purchase. He made comparison to the explosion of GSM ownership which is both a factor of cost and relevance. Nevertheless, it was a consensus that Installmental payment scheme and leasing options are veritable accelerants of IT penetration. The presentation of Mr Soji Romeo of Computer for All Nigerian Initiative (CANi), Mr Emeka Ndu, MD CI Leasing PLC and Mrs Bunmi Badiru, MD of Termex Ltd and new 2nd Vice President of ITAN buttressed this view.

The Project Manager of CANi, Mr Romeo encouraged all Nigerians to take advantage of CANi computers launched on June 6, 2006 by President Olusegun Obasanjo at the State House, Abuja. He said CANi guarantees 30% discount payable over 24 months against equivalent PC configurations in the market place. He mentioned that the discount was possible because CANi is a Government Assisted Purchase Programme (GAPP) and major IT players are partners in the project namely; Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corporation in the spirit of Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Others in the partnership include: OEMs such as Beta, Brian, Zinox, IBM, HP, Omatek; Banks such as Skye, Fidelity, UBA; Software Coy such as Microsoft – MS Office, Intel – CBT, Palette – Norton A/V, ICDL; ISPs: Suburban – Abuja, Netcom – Lagos; etc. Mr Romeo further said that new CANi partners are welcome.

Mr Emeka Ndu of CI Leasing posited that (IT) equipment leasing over outright purchase is still the best asset ownership model because of its usefulness for increasing productive capacity. Mrs Badiru displayed her company’s model of IT equipment leasing with SmartKid product which provides cutting edge technology PC with original Microsoft educational software and at much reduced prices. Mr Tunji Balogun, MD of Brian Integrated Systems Ltd stated the vision of his company in the CANi project and in the IT industry as that of increasing capacity for the nation because without appropriate capacity, the much desired IT Penetration will be a mirage, he said.

Mr Babatunde Robinson, the Channel Manager of Intel in Nigeria demonstrating the Intel new, faster and cost effective Core 2 Duo processor indicated clearly that Intel as the worldwide leader in processor manufacturing will continue to support IT penetration in Nigeria through CANi and its other industry partners with cutting edge productivity processors.

Dr Chris Nwannena, President, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Chief Ayodele, NCS 1st Vice President, and Mr Chris Uwaje former ITAN President were of the view that periodic review of government policies as it affects IT Penetration (eg IT Policy) would guaranty accelerated IT penetration which is a sine qua non for 21st century development.

Mr Sikiru Shehu, the Registrar of CPN, commended government’s wisdom for the establishment of CANi and many other far reaching IT initiatives in the past years and articulated broad collaboration of all stakeholders to the attainment of the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
